When it comes to taking the cutest newborn baby boy photos, I’m all about getting up close and personal with my subjects. I like to get plenty of detail shots, from tiny fingers and toes to a pouty mouth and newborn head with fluffy hairs. I also go for whole-body shots that create a cozy, sweet vibe.
That means I use fluffy rug backgrounds and soft blanket wraps, when appropriate. Some photographers load up their newborn images with tons of props. My aesthetic calls for a more minimalistic approach, which keeps the focus on baby. I love a simple knitted diaper cover or soft hat, one that is adorable, but not too distracting.
One of the best “props,” so to speak, is another member of the family. Parents are usually pretty darn tired when their photo session arrives, around seven to ten days after baby is born. This is especially true of mom, who is recovering physically from the birth. So with the fog of fatigue, appealing in the photos does not often come to mind. But I think it’s a wonderful idea because it captures the love for the newest member of the family. When we can involve older siblings, too, that makes the pictures all the more special.
I always have a pre-shoot consultation with mom or dad to discuss overall look and feel, as well as the details of a newborn photo session. Because babies have their own timetable, I keep due dates in mind, but have great flexibility for scheduling our time together. I encourage parents to look at my newborn and baby portfolio and see what images “speak” to them. There’s never any rush during a photo shoot, so we can have a lot of creative times together.
