Family Shoot days are some of the most fun, especially for us Moms. The outcome is the best part! However, getting the whole family comfortable in an environment can be a task. You want your whole crew to feel at ease, and as if they belong in the setting they are in. But that location also needs to provide some personality – or at the very least, a tone. For families, I usually recommend these 3 location types, and I hope they help you when thinking about where you want your session.
NATURE
A very natural setting is always a win. Nothing adds life to a shoot like being outside by a lake, or in the woods. Plus, kids are generally very comfortable outside. It is familiar, and they can run and run, pose for a picture, then run and run again. They do not get restless and there is some more freedom in this environment. They can scream, laugh and run some more. It isn’t for every crew, but it is definitely a great option.
URBAN
A city setting can really add a different element to the shoot. Dallas, in particular, has some incredible murals, and spunky urban areas that are beautiful to photograph in. For all of those families out there that don’t thrive in nature, this is an incredible option.
STUDIO
The studio setting is always always always a good option. There is a ton of freedom in the shots we get and fewer distractions for the kids than in natural or urban settings. However, it can feel like more pressure on children to pose. That is usually quickly overcome with a little music and dancing around though, so still a great option. Another benefit is that there are no weather issues when you are in the studio. No need to reschedule for rain, heat etc.
