It’s become something of a recent tradition to have a cake smashing activity at a child’s first birthday. The point is to let your baby have fun smearing sweet, sticky frosting all over themselves and everything within reach. Which is fun at any age, really. Usually, a separate cake is prepared just for the kiddo, so the other party-goers can have their piece of cake sans tiny handprints.

This cutie had his first birthday at the W Hotel in Dallas, with Mom, Dad, and the whole family in attendance. At the beginning of this cake smashing photoshoot we got some shots of him in his super-dapper bow-tie and cardigan ensemble.

Sidenote: One of the things I loved about this shoot was all the coordinating teal-y blue elements. Some were by design, like the cake, hat, and Dad’s shirt. Others were by sheer luck! Like the lampshade interior, wall paneling, and Dr. Seuss’s book cover. Kismet!

Cake smashing reactions tend to vary from kid to kid. Some love it and get cake and frosting over as much of themselves and everything else as possible. And others freak out a little at all the sticky mess that just won’t come off.

After the first few grabs, this guy really just wasn’t thrilled with all the stuff on his hands. He had a much better time jumping in the frosting with some help from Dad.

We did a cake smashing photoshoot for Miette’s birthday a few years ago, with similar unenthusiastic results. In any case, I think we need to move the adult cake smashing from weddings to birthday parties, complete with dancing on tabletops – who’s with me?
