Remember the good ol’ days when family portraits involved going to a tiny studio, maybe in a mall, where parents would try to wrangle their crying kids into sitting still and shutting up long enough for harried photographers to snap a couple of strained and awkward smiles, all while trying to make Texas Big Hair or non-ironic, non-hipster giant-framed glasses (or both) look good on people who were sitting in front of a cloudy blue background? I sincerely hope you’re cringing right now.
Fortunately, we’ve progressed as a society. Texas Big Hair has mostly run its course. And while large-framed glasses are a current fashion trend (again!), portrait photography has progressed beyond the standard neutral background and forced smiles. Hence, one of my favorite types of sessions, the at-home family photography session.
These sessions rock because the kids are more relaxed in their own home. This means more natural, happy, and active shots of the kiddos playing, and less-stressed expressions on the parents. Plus, the family gets to showcase their home style as well.
This shoot was great. Nice parents, great kids, cozy home. Nothing tricky or fancy to set up, just shots of the family being a family. As family portraits should be.
If you do still happen to have Texas Big Hair, please contact me so I can take some photos of this anachronism.
