Happy New Year! To start 2017 off right, today I’m sharing a beautiful newborn photo shoot from my Dallas studio. This baby boy was sweet and sleepy, spending most of our time together snoozing away. This is pretty typical for a newborn. They spend most of their time sleeping, so expect that during your baby photo shoot.

There are as many styles of newborn photography as there are newborn photographers. Personally, I believe in creating classic pictures that will look as good in ten years as they do now. I do that by using minimal props, and keeping the composition and lines simple and clean. I avoid trends in newborn photography because that dates a photo and takes focus away from who should be the center of attention—your baby.

Texture is a big part of my photographs:g the smooth skin of the baby against the chunky ribbing of a warm blanket or the soft, knitted fiber of a tiny hat. This contrast creates soft, appealing photos that draw the focus to the sweetness of your baby. I like including a stuffed animal in a few of the pictures for the cute factor and because, like a photo with mom or dad, it draws attention to how tiny a newborn actually is, something that’s easy to forget as baby gets bigger. Also, if that stuffed animal becomes THE favorite, then being able to look back and see it in the newborn photos in its original state — before it has been worn down a bit by love and sticky toddler fingers — is incredibly moving.

I encourage parents to be a part of their baby’s photo shoot. Photographing a newborn in the arms of an adult shows off just how tiny he or she really is, and captures the love between baby and mommy or daddy. It also captures a precious time in a family’s life together, those first few weeks when everybody is so happy (and tired). I look back at photos from the first few weeks of my own children’s lives and feel so fortunate to have captured that time.
