I recently ran across a poem called The Family Tree by Olive Waters. It made me think about the work I do as a Dallas baby photographer and family photographer, the memories I capture, and their importance for future generations.
We’ve got a family album
Like a family tree
A thrill to turn the pages
The pictures we can seeStarting off with grands and greats
Then slowly down the line
Like a book of history
A journey through the timeFashions start to alter
Mustaches come and go
Ladies skirts skip up and down
A proper fashion showTop hats change to boaters
To caps then none at all
Ladies bonnets disappear
And so does grannies shawlPicture’s change to colour
Black and white has gone
A different place, a different time
So much to look uponBut what is so amazing
Is the likeness we can see
Showing up the genes
Right through our family tree
The photos I’m sharing today are of a family I’ve been shooting for years. We took some outdoor pictures for Christmas cards one year, and springtime photos in the park another year, for example. What a pleasure its been, watching these three kids grow up in front of my camera. Knowing all of these photos will be looked at again and again not only by this family, but future children and grandchildren. After all, like the poem says above, who hasn’t looked at old family pictures and wondered at the people in them, what they were wearing and thinking and doing. It’s a privilege to be a part of a family’s life in this lasting and important way.
