Working with small children for sibling and cake smash photos creates some fun challenges for any professional (hello, meltdowns). Baby pictures and toddler photo sessions can also bring out some charming character traits, like in these sibling photos in the Highland Park area of Dallas.

This adorable family is a repeat client. Check out the little boy’s birthday party and cake smash photoshoot for a look at how much he and his sister look alike at the same age. Big brother was a big help in keeping his little sister in a good mood. In addition to  helping keep her still enough for me to shoot, even when he was “off-camera.”

The parents chose to include family photos, sibling pictures, and a few of their little girl with her first birthday cake smash in their outdoor photo session. The cake smashing is a big trend in children’s photography now. Have you seen all the Pinterest activity about it? Whenever I capture a cake smash, having parents and siblings nearby can help bring out smiles. And, if the meltdown occurs, that’s pretty adorable, too. See the last photo for proof.

Children find cameras pretty boring. When I’m moving around taking pictures, they need me to talk to them. But also that interaction from family to keep them entertained. When they get that attention, I am more easily able to capture the kinds of smiles and happy faces that families want in their children’s photos. When this big brother, who is pretty little himself, was sitting with his sister, he was chattering away and keeping her from getting irritated. It was a win for everyone involved.

Enjoy your dose of toddler and baby cuteness for the week.
