A newborn baby smiles in a portrait.

The popularity of digital photography, online sharing, home printing, and social media over the last decade makes it easier than ever to capture those special moments with your newborn. We’re thrilled that the art of photography is now more accessible to everyone! But even with all the tools so widely available, nothing beats the work of an experienced Dallas newborn photographer. There is so much to gain from a professional session—one that is created just for you and your baby.

We’re sharing our top six green flags for choosing a newborn photographer. Check out part one below.

1. Safety Is Always First

Newborn babies require special touch and care. Your photographer must have experience—and ideally, training—with moving your infant in the safest way possible. Poses should be natural and gentle and never cause harm. Babies aren’t comfortable when forced into contorted positions, and it can be very dangerous to their necks and joints. A newborn photographer shouldn’t ever put unnecessary strain on a newborn body.

Jayme of Miette Photography trained with a NICU nurse to learn how to move and lift tiny babies without risking harm. Plus, she raised two babies of her own. Her personal and professional experience go hand in hand.

Unfortunately, we’ve seen new local photographers purchase a digital camera and attempt to sell newborn photography without learning safe practices. So ask your photography candidates about their experience with newborn safety.

2. Plenty of Experience

A camera, backdrop, and website do not a newborn photographer make. Experience matters. A professional Dallas newborn photographer knows what angles work best with a sleeping baby, how to coax out smiles, and the best times of day to schedule a shoot.

We recommend finding a photographer with five to ten years of experience. Also, scroll through their extensive portfolio before paying booking fees.

3. High Quality Photos

Having an entire series of images, rather than just one or two good ones, allows you to create gallery walls and albums to capture a point in time with your family. You want a range of excellent looks and poses. Jayme typically provides 40-50 high quality images to choose from.

A series of technically correct images are worth so much more than photos that are too bright, too dark, unfocused, or incorrectly lit. You’ll be proud to display the end result.

High quality, professional photography is an investment—art commands value. Select your luxury photography based on style, expertise, and reputation, and set your expectations high.

You can spread the expense around by asking friends and family to contribute to your newborn’s photo session. Check out our Gift Registry page, where loved ones can give any amount. Whether you choose Miette Photography or another well-vetted, reputable Dallas newborn photographer, we wish you the best newborn photos you could’ve hoped for.
