Mackenzie walked into her Dallas maternity photographer session carrying more than just her baby. She was carrying the weight of loss, the hope of a rainbow pregnancy, and the complicated feelings that come with both.

“Last year, we lost our first baby in an unexpected pregnancy complication,” she shared. “Our worlds were destroyed and I fell into a deep hole of pain. We were blessed to become pregnant with Emarie so soon after and cherish our angel above everyday.”

This maternity session honored a woman who had experienced a painful loss and was finding her way back to feeling confident in her own skin.

Why She Chose Multiple Looks for Her Photoshoot

Mackenzie came to the session wanting to explore different sides of herself: the strong woman, the vulnerable mama-to-be, the partner in a shared journey, and everything in between.

We created several distinct looks throughout her maternity photoshoot. Each outfit revealed something different. The black suit showed her strength. The white button-up captured her natural, unguarded side. The dramatic lighting with her partner told the story of what they’d survived together. The casual jeans-and-bra look was about raw vulnerability and accepting her changing body exactly as it was.

Struggling With Body Image During a Rainbow Pregnancy

When I asked Mackenzie how she felt about her changing body, her answer was heartbreakingly honest.

“I really struggled with my changing body and the illusion of public expectations. As much as I tried, it was very hard for me not to compare myself to others. I often reminded myself that my body was doing what it needed to for my baby, but it was easy to be deterred and insecure.”

That struggle is real for so many pregnant women, but especially for those carrying rainbow babies. After loss, your relationship with pregnancy becomes complicated. You’re grateful your body is doing what it needs to do, but you’re also hyper-aware of every change, every discomfort, every moment of not feeling like yourself.

Mackenzie hoped her maternity photos would help her see herself differently: “I hope to see a confident, strong, beautiful mother to be who feels right in her skin.”

And that’s exactly what we captured.

Why Dallas Maternity Photographer Sessions Matter

For Mackenzie, this maternity session served a purpose beyond documentation. “Besides wanting to cherish this moment as long as possible, I also needed the time to cherish myself. Pregnancy was demanding on me and caused a lack of energy to care for myself as I moved through each stage.”

After loss, pregnancy becomes all-consuming in a different way. There’s a lot of doctor’s visits. There’s constant monitoring. There’s the mental and emotional exhaustion of hoping everything will be okay this time.

Taking time for maternity photos was an act of self-care. A moment to pause, honor her bravery, and feel beautiful and powerful in her changing body.

The Partner Photos That Honored Their Shared Journey

Some of the most powerful images from Mackenzie’s session were the ones with her partner under dramatic spotlight lighting. After losing their first baby together, this pregnancy was their shared hope, their shared fear, and their shared miracle.

These photos captured the partnership that carried them through grief and into this moment of cautious joy.

What She Hopes for Baby Emarie

When I asked Mackenzie what she hoped for her daughter, her answer was beautiful:

“I hope she is strong and athletic like her father, and kind and determined like myself. I hope she knows she has a place in this world, and a voice worth listening to. I hope she finds love and joy, even in the toughest moments. I hope she never forgets the village that stands behind her, and strives for the life she desires.”

One day, Emarie will see these maternity photos and understand just how loved she was before she even arrived. She will know how much courage it took for her mama to carry her with hope after devastating loss.
