Ladies, let’s talk hair! Prepping for a session, or anything of importance, we all have our checklist of things to go through. The outfit, makeup and hair are our usual top three.  Especially with a maternity session, I get a ton of questions about how clients should style their hair.

Your look is really determined by the overall vibe you’d like to have in your session, but I do have one major tip I always recommend for maternity sessions: versatility

During a maternity session, we will go between settings, play around and have several outfit changes. That is why I will always recommend doing your hair in a way that can start down, then easily be taken up and still look good for a whole different look.

Sometimes we will want a sleek straight look or some long loose curls. But a fun messy ponytail lends a sweet, playful vibe to the images that work well with several looks.

During a Maternity Session where we want to do some sexier or even semi-nude shots, I will always start with the more put-together and clean-cut looks – typically straight or wavy hair down and neat. This pairs well with the shots with the husband/partner.

Then we can move to more revealing shots, and that is when we would get that fun, tousled look that also lends a more casual air.

You can even do a flower crown or headpiece that you can take on and off during your session.

If you plan on getting your hair done professionally, chat with your hairdresser before your session or do a trial run, and they should know exactly what to do to make sure you feel confident and look incredible with both a versatile hairstyle.
