For those of us with older children, it is easy to forget how monumental the birth of our first was. It changes a couple into a family, and creates parents, that most wonderful — and challenging — choice in life. When I think back to the birth of my oldest, I remember being surprised that I’d been allowed to take him home from the hospital. So much responsibility! Such a tiny baby! Was I up for the task, ready to be totally responsible for this wiggly creature?
But I also remember the joy of seeing his tiny fingers and toes, of just watching him be. I’m on a bit of a poetry kick lately, and ran across Infant Joy by William Blake. I can relate to this, and I think a lot of new parents can, too.
“I have no name:
I am but two days old.”
What shall I call thee?
“I happy am,
Joy is my name.”
Sweet joy befall thee!Pretty joy!
Sweet joy, but two days old.
Sweet Joy I call thee:
Thou dost smile,
I sing the while;
Sweet joy befall thee!
Today, I’m sharing newborn boy photography, a brand-new baby less than a week old. Can you even remember when your child was this small? One of my goals with newborn photography is to capture that smallness, especially in relation to the parents. I was so glad this mom and dad wanted to be a part of this photo session. I think it makes it all the more special. The birth of a baby is as much about the parents as it is about this child.
