Toddler photo sessions are often a wild time with boisterous interactions. These little folks have energy to burn, great big personalities, and teeny, tiny attention spans. It makes my work unpredictable and a lot of fun!

Today, I’m sharing the toddler photos of a clever and animated little boy named Brooks. His mom Leah wanted these taken for his third birthday and we had an exciting afternoon together. I’ll let her tell you about it.

Before I met Jayme [Okerblom, owner of Miette Photography], I worked with two other photographers to take newborn, one-, and two-year photos of my son Brooks. The results were okay, but less than I hoped for. A lot of the images were overexposed, underexposed, or just kind of blah.

Jayme’s clean, crisp style appeals to me: no clutter, sharp images, and strong focus on the subject instead of a bunch of props. I looked at her toddler portfolio and was impressed, especially with her use of both black and white as well as color photography. I liked that variety.

Before the photo shoot, we spoke on the phone about the overall look and feel I wanted and Jayme had a lot of ideas, like incorporating adorable face masks and superhero costume into the images. I felt like she really listened to me and she asked a lot of questions about what specifically I hadn’t liked about past photos of Brooks.

Our time together was so entertaining! I was super impressed with Jayme’s ability to keep the attention of my three year old. She even managed to turn his attention breaks into great images, like the one where he’s doing a donkey kick. There was no rush — she was ready to spend as much time as we needed. Well, at least until Brooks totally lost interest in what we were doing, haha.

I am thrilled with the results! Jayme delivered about 90 images and all of them are wonderful. Brooks looks completely adorable and engaged with the camera. I couldn’t be happier.
