What to wear, the second most important thing about your session- right after who your photographer is. Picking an outfit can be stressful, let alone an outfit for pictures that will last forever. But it can also be so fun! With my years of experience in photography, I have picked up some helpful tips for families choosing their session looks.

What not to Wear

We will just go ahead and say it, don’t match and wear the same outfits! Everyone in your family has their own unique personality, and clothes can help showcase that. Instead of matching, try coordinating. Obviously, you want your style and level of formality to be consistent, but that doesn’t mean you need matching shirts or even matching colors. The last thing I want to see is the whole family in white shirts and beige pants like some bad school uniform. Instead, wear coordinated outfits and throw in a similar color in into each. This adds a level of cohesiveness that is pleasing to look at but not distracting. For example, mom could be in a pink blouse and that same pink could be in a ribbon in the daughter’s hair. Dad doesn’t need to wear pink but can coordinate in a blue or gray in the same tonal range.

Patterns? Textures?

Patterns and textures are easy to rule out when putting together outfits because basics never disappoint. But playing with patterns and textures is the perfect way to throw some more personality in your session! Layer them, mix patterns, use multiple textures… have fun with it. You all have individual personalities, and you can showcase them and own them through your clothes. Just stay away from logos, print or images on t-shirts and extremely small stripes or plaids (they do strange visual things in digital photos viewed on screen.)
