Getting ready for a photoshoot isn’t the same as getting ready for a regular day. Of course, we

want you to feel and look like yourself, but the camera and flash adds a little bit of a challenge when doing your makeup. Here are a few tricks of the trade I’ve gathered over the years, for all you lovely women that want to do your own makeup for your session!

MOISTURIZE

This is in most of our daily routines anyway, or at least we all know it should be. But, when you are having your portrait made and flash is involved, it can tend to be a little unforgiving. Make sure you moisturize the days leading up to your session, and the morning of and drink lots of water. Cetaphil is an all-around good moisturizer for face and body, and it’s super affordable!

FOUNDATION

Don’t overdo the foundation. Super heavy cream foundations can look cakey and show up extra thick on camera. Go for a lighter weight foundation or a powder. and apply sparingly. It is actually easier for your photographer to touch up blemishes than to fix heavy makeup. Also, always a good move to make sure that your foundation is as close to your skin color as possible. That is another obvious tip, but sometimes clients will get a spray tan the day before and then forget to match their face to their body! I am actually not a fan of spray tanning before sessions as it is almost always overdone and comes across as orange but if you MUST go that route, be sure to match your face.  Makeup Forever is a good option for color matching.

KEEP IT SIMPLE!

We have all seen how big it is to contour right now. Everyone has a YouTube tutorial on it. But it is SO not necessary for a photo session.  I am a huge advocate of the more natural look in photos – so keep the contouring to a MINIMUM. Again, if you are doing your own makeup, the powder is going to be easier to blend than a cream. Tarte makes great products, and this is a pretty affordable option.

 EYES

The focus of your face should be your eyes. Make them pop. There are some amazing products out there, and you can make this happen with a natural or super glam look. Do what makes you feel confident but again, do not overdo it. If you are going to try and find a new eyeshadow pallette, Morphe makes incredible and affordable products with so many different color options. Be careful with the false eyelashes. They are a hot trend right now but wont be in a couple of years and you could risking making your images look very dated if your lashes look like camel lashes.

SETTING SPRAY

Set your makeup. It sounds ridiculous and like it is probably not a product that should work, but it is a lifesaver. It will just melt all of your powder products together, hold your makeup to your face and keep it from smearing throughout the shoot. Personally, I use the Morphe setting spray and it is my favorite product I use. It will lock my makeup in for the entire day.

 BRING A TOUCH-UP KIT

Please, bring a touch-up kit. Your lipstick, some powder, concealer and if you have oily skin bring some blotting sheets. They will help keep your shine down throughout the day.
