As you and your family consider Dallas newborn photography, we have a few tips on how to get the highest quality for your buck. We already shared our first three green flags for choosing a photographer:

  1. Safety is always first.
  2. Plenty of experience.
  3. High quality photos.

Now, let’s get into part two of how to have the best possible newborn shoot.

4: Fewer Props, More Simplicity

All too often, newborn photos are jammed with props and distractions. They take away from the focal point: your newborn baby. At Miette Photography, we create classic, minimalist photos. The clean, modern look is never outdated or over-done.

We limit props to cozy blankets, crocheted hats, and snuggly stuffed animals. Backdrops and sets are simple and comfortable. Just like your newborn will be the new center of attention in your home, so should they be the center of every photo. So shy away from cluttered newborn photography or studios that overemphasize props.

5: Pre-Shoot Consultation

A pre-shoot consultation is a time to discuss your expectations and help you acclimate to the environment. We go over the style of your session, from clothing to mood to shooting style. Our hope is to deliver the exact photos you’re dreaming of. When choosing a photographer, ask about their plans for a pre-shoot consultation.

The best time to reserve your newborn photo session is while you’re pregnant in the third trimester. We book out months in advance, and we want to get you the photos you want at the right age for your baby. Traditionally, parents bring their baby for a newborn photo session between five days to two weeks after the due date.

6: Relax and Unwind

Newborn sessions are long—typically three to four hours. And 90% of the time is spent soothing the baby to sleep. That’s our job! This is a time for you to relax with a book, iPad, or even a nap on the couch. You may only need to be in a few photos. Our goal is to give you some much-rested need during the roller coaster newborn season.

Plus, when you’re calm, so is your baby. We harness a zen-like state by moving slowly, humming, or cooing while photographing, which helps the baby to feel calm and protected. Newborn baby cuddles with stuffed sheep.
