I love it when a client invites me to be a part of their baby and family journey. I get to photograph a maternity session, then newborn, six months, a year…it’s always an honor to capture those cherished family memories. This is exactly why I am so thrilled to be a part of this newborn photo session.
Last week, I featured a British mom’s glamorous maternity photo session. It was her second pregnancy, and she hadn’t taken any professional pictures of her first one, so these were all the more important to her.
This week, it’s time for the newborn photos. This family welcomed a healthy baby boy and came back into the studio for his first photos. I’m so glad mom chose to include her preschool-aged daughter in some of the shots with her new baby brother. There was a lot of sweetness there between them and I know these will be favorite photos for years to come. Most importantly, proof, when the kids are teenagers, that they do actually like each other.
A newborn photo session offers great flexibility for capturing family members and their interactions with the baby. I think it’s always good to have lots of photos of the newborn, and also to include mom, siblings, dad, grandparents. I’ve even had clients bring the family dog for a newborn photo session. The more the merrier. Very few events in life bring as much joy as a new member of the family and it’s wonderful to include lots of people in the celebratory photos.
As you can tell from the pictures below, I’m not big on a lot of props and extras. I believe the people and emotions in the photographs should be the focus. But a cute knitted hat is always welcome in a newborn picture—who else can pull them off with such style?
