Pregnancy is different for every woman. For some, it’s a necessary pain to get a precious child. For others, it’s a joy and delight, a time of wonder. Both experiences are valid.
I had the pleasure of shooting maternity pictures for one of these latter types of women recently. She wanted glamorous maternity photos of her changing body, and I was happy to oblige. This British mom hadn’t taken any maternity photos with her first pregnancy. Which made these all the more important. She wanted to include her preschool-aged daughter in these photos, which I think is a great idea. It shows the tender relationship between parent and child and the excitement of the girl at the arrival of a sibling. We shot several funny ones, as well—the “belly shots” of mom and daughter are some of my favorites.
I chose to shoot the majority of these in black and white. It adds drama and captures a lot more emotion than color photography. Just look at the two pictures of the little girl loving on her mommy’s baby bump. And for glamorous maternity photos, black and white is perfect.
