Every stage of a child’s life is unique and offers me the opportunity to capture something beautiful with my camera. This is a particular joy when a family stays with me and chooses professional photo sessions at sequential ages. A common photo journey in my studio starts with maternity photography, then progresses to newborn, six month, and one-year pictures.
One such family appeared on my blog last week with newborn photos of a gorgeous baby. This week, I’m sharing six month baby pictures of the same little boy. What a difference that time made! Newborns are adorable little nuggets who pretty much just sleep, eat, poop, and look adorable.
As a photographer, it’s important I understand the developmental differences between ages. I need to ensure not only the best images but also the safest experience for babies. I spent time with a NICU nurse to learn how to handle newborns, for example, and I had my own two kids for one-on-one lessons.
At six months, the baby is giggling, laughing, and interacting in a totally charming way. Making eye contact and showing interest in the world around him- it’s seriously cute.. His personality is really shining. You can see preferences and opinions in a way not possible as a newborn. These are things every parent loves to witness and I do, too. My photography style aims to clear away the visual clutter and focus in on baby to capture those very personality traits that are so endearing. I’ve been doing this for 25 years and I love this part of my work best of all.
