Black and white maternity photography offers a beautiful addition to color images from your photo shoot. Monochrome images (another name for black and white) might seem like an anachronism in our modern age, like watching a silent movie, but in fact, they offer a lot of advantages.

The appeal of black and white maternity photography

One reason I like black and white maternity photos is the classic feel. Watch a movie like Casa Blanca and you’ll see what I mean. A black and white image doesn’t go out of style. This is particularly true with my clean style of shooting — I don’t use many props at all and my approach has been described as minimalist. Without a lot of visual clutter, the focus is on the elements of the photo.

Color is powerful. When it is present, other elements tend to fade more to the background. For that reason, contrast, shape, light, form, and texture are all enhanced without the complimentary and opposing colors that bring a color image to life. The viewer simply pays attention to different things in a monochrome image. One of those is emotion.

A black and white image has the potential to hold more emotion than a color image precisely because there is no color to distract the eye. A monochrome image also naturally has more drama because there is no color present. You can see that in the photos below of mom and dad together. Their poses are so intimate and just wouldn’t look the same in color. You can see their love for each other and joy to welcome their baby.
