Last week, we looked at the maternity photos for a patriotic couple, both military veterans of Afghanistan. They are first-time parents, very much in love, and so excited about welcoming their baby boy. Their maternity photos captured a lot of emotion between them. Plus, we got to play with some fun Black and white newborn photography.

This week, it’s time for the baby photos. Many of them are examples of black and white newborn photography. Like I’ve mentioned before, I like the look of black and white because it keeps the focus on the subject without the distraction of color. It also offers a timeless, classic look with a great tonal range between the deepest blacks and the brightest whites. This is particularly appealing in newborn photos because it directs the viewer’s eye to the sweetness of the baby. (That’s also a reason I don’t use a lot of “baby props.” I want the focus of the photos to be on the infant.)

For the baby photos, the couple again chose to be included in the pictures. This creates such a meaningful memory of the day. It not only captures the love of parents for a child, but also the tenderness between them as they start their parenting journey together.

Since both parents are veterans, we decided the American Flag was fitting for this photoshoot. And who knows? Some day this tiny baby might grow up to serve in the military himself and this picture will be his favorite. I’m featuring this photo in particular since today is Independence Day and we owe a debt of gratitude to all veterans, past and present. So thank you to mom and dad for your service to our country, and I hope everyone has a happy, 4th of July.
