Let’s face it… it is pretty common for Dad to be less-than-thrilled about the Family Photo Session scheduled. Adding that they have to wear “nice” clothes on top of it all, it can sound like a major task. However, Dad doesn’t have to be uncomfortable, and it doesn’t have to be hard to get the right look. Here are my Top 5 Fashion Tips for Men.

1. Avoid Small Patterns

This goes for anyone, but I see it a lot with men’s button-down shirts. There are so many nice shirts that have a very sharp, small plaid or checkered pattern on them. Those look incredible in everyday life, but in digital photos, the pattern creates a visual blur that can make you feel a bit cross-eyed. Button-down shirts are great if that is what you are comfortable in but stick to solids in a color that is flattering to your skin tone.

2. Layer to Add Interest

Adding accessories or layers can create a lot of interest in your photos. Simple jeans, a solid shirt and maybe a jacket if that is your style. But remember to keep it simple – the key is wearing pieces that put the focus on you and your family, and not on the clothing.

3. Be Comfortable

Unless you are going for a very formal session, I always recommend clothes that look nice, but that you are comfortable in. The goal is to have your personality shine through, and that won’t happen if you feel like a robot, or not like yourself.

4. Personality is Great how to style the men In your life for your family session

Let’s say you and your spouse have 3 sons, and you are all die-hard Mavericks Fans…. that is so great! You can all wear jerseys, or themed shirts for a couple of shots. Bringing in the pieces that represent something important to you shows personality and adds some fun – especially if those are items you have bonded over.

5. Coordinate, not match how to style the men In your life for your family session

This may be the most difficult for some people to grasp but it is an important point. You want your clothing to coordinate with the rest of the family but you don’t all want to match. We have all seen the photos of the family in matching khakis and white shirts. Those images end up looking too forced and will ultimately date your final photos. Choose a color range for the family and have those colors run through all outfits with plenty of variety. Let your personalities show, while still looking like you fit together.
