You guys. Today we are going to dive into and highlight one of the cutest rights-of-passage around. A good old-fashioned Cake Smash. I have never ever met a single person that didn’t love seeing a kiddo dive head-first into a cake. It is adorable, fun, and just classic. The kids usually have an incredible reaction, and EVERYONE loves seeing the pictures. It is a definite crowd-pleasing shoot to have. Also- anyone recognize this nugget? He was just a newborn in the last session we shared of him!

Day of the Cake Smash

A cake smash session is the big first birthday celebration photoshoot. Not only is it super fun, but it is an incredible bookend for the One Year Album Sessions Jayme offers. She always starts the session with your adorable nugget and Mom and Dad. It is great to get the shots of you with your babe out of the way early, so then the rest of the session is baby-centric. For the little one’s individual shots remember that you can definitely bring multiple outfits, however, the baby will probably only tolerate so much. After Jayme rounds out the solo shots of your almost-toddler, you will all dive right into the cake smash.

Jayme keeps it super super simple. Just your little one-year-old and a cake. She doesn’t use a ton of props or anything to create a big scene. She really wants the focus to be on the babe and their natural reaction. Which, as I am sure most parents know, can be love and fascination or complete disgust. Either way, the shots are SO cute.

Following the cake part of the session, Jayme loves to do some shots in a vintage bathtub. Your kiddo will need a rinse, and they tend to love the warm bath. Having shots of them playing, splashing, and laughing is just a beautiful addition to the session.

Pick A Cake?

After years and years of doing sessions like these, Jayme has some pro-tips/ life hacks that make the session ADORABLE annnddd keeps it easy for parents to clean up. Her number one tip is to avoid super greasy icings! Not only does the consistency and stickiness of it upset a lot of babies, but it is so hard to get off. Think of it as tar. This doesn’t mean you need to avoid colored icings. However, if you go for a color bring an extra change of clothes for yourself, as well as baby. Unfortunately, there is not a super cute and picturesque vintage tub for parents in Jayme’s studio.
